It had been hardly 24 hours since I got my new mobile number. I was yet to let my near and dear ones know about my new number when the mobile handset started ringing. I was astonished. Expecting it to be the telecom company, I answered the call. Lo ! It was from a reputed bank's representative who was soliciting me to go for a new credit card. The first question that ran across my mind was, "How in the world did he get my number when I had not revealed it to single soul?". Past bitter experiences with such representatives had mind was prejudiced against them. I plain loathed them. I recomposed myself and told him in as much a calm voice as I could muster that I had enough cards for 3 generations of my family and that I did not want more. He persisted, "But Sir, this is a platinum card and ...". I cut him short, "...and I can spend more and turn bankrupt faster, is it?". A long silence ensued. India not conducive to Silicon Startups.. But why?

Silicon Startups mushroom by the hundreds in cities like California, Boston, Chicago and Miami. Why don't we see a similar effect in our own backyard ?We have the necessary human resource, the best institutions for higher education, the same democratic setup that America has. Even venture funding is big business in India these days having its own share of multi millionaires who have made it to the Forbes list. With Web 2.0 close to 2 years old now, we still see a precipitation of Web 2.0 application startups in America that get listed everyday on various sites like TechCrunch, TechMeme, etc on the Blogosphere. Why is it that India or any other developing nation does not see a similar hatchlings? Blogspot Blocking in Major Cities Only?

Following my earlier post that brought up the issue of blogspot blogs being blocked by Indian ISPs , there has been a hulla baloo across the Indian blogosphere about the indiscriminate blocking and the non-explanation being given by the government. One source however does mention that this might have been prompted following the discovery that the Mumbai serial blasts terrorist suspects used blogspot blogs to communicate with their group. This has prompted Western bloggers to take up the cause with Boing Boing posting an extensive article on the same . Mercury News , TechMeme and Rediff too have brought the news into the open domain. Some of the bloggers have even kicked off a wiki site that allows you to report if your ISP has blocked the blogspot blogs . Amit has come out with another detailed post that has FAQs on the whole issue.
